In today's economy, semi-trailer trucks account for roughly 20 percent of highway traffic. Even as far back as twenty years ago, the National Transportation Safety Boarddiscovered combination trucks are involved in twice as many fatal accidents per 100 million miles as passenger trucks.
Hopefully, those numbers have gone down over the last 20 years due to positive improvements in public policy, awareness, and federal regulations. However, there is more work to do.
Substandard braking systems perhaps account for the majority of accidents involving semis or tractor-trailer trucks. These braking systems must be maintained and checked regularly to ensure tip-top functioning. Even slight wear on a semi truck's braking system can cause stopping distance to be doubled or even tripled.
This situation can lead not only to dramatically increased stopping distances, but increases the likelihood of jackknifing as well.
In 1988, after the inspection of over 1500 semi-trailer, big rig trucks, the NTSB discovered that over 50 percent of these heavy freight trucks were violating brake system laws - and over 45 percent had brake adjustment deficiencies.
The NTSB repeated the same study in 1992. Much to their chagrin, they found that out of nearly 800 trucks inspected, roughly 60 percent were placed out of service for violating brake system laws.
